A student blows up at a teacher, drops the F-bomb. The usual approach at Lincoln – and, safe to say, at most high schools in this country – is automatic suspension. Instead, Sporleder sits the kid down and says quietly: “Wow. Are you OK? This doesn’t sound like you. What’s going on?”

He gets even more specific: “You really looked stressed. On a scale of 1-10, where are you with your anger?” The kid was ready. Ready, man! For an anger blast to his face….”How could you do that?” “What’s wrong with you?”…and for the big boot out of school. But he was NOT ready for kindness.

The armor-plated defenses melt like ice under a blowtorch and the words pour out: “My dad’s an alcoholic. He’s promised me things my whole life and never keeps those promises.” The waterfall of words that go deep into his home life, which is no piece of breeze, end with this sentence: “I shouldn’t have blown up at the teacher.” Whoa.

We were discussing homosexuality because of an allusion to it in the book we were reading, and several boys made comments such as, “That’s disgusting.” We got into the debate and eventually a boy admitted that he was terrified/disgusted when he was once sharing a taxi and the other male passenger made a pass at him.

The lightbulb went off. “Oh,” I said. “I get it. See, you are afraid, because for the first time in your life you have found yourself a victim of unwanted sexual advances by someone who has the physical ability to use force against you.” The boy nodded and shuddered visibly.

“But,” I continued. “As a woman, you learn to live with that from the time you are fourteen, and it never stops. We live with that fear every day of our lives. Every man walking through the parking garage the same time you are is either just a harmless stranger or a potential rapist. Every time.”

The girls in the room nodded, agreeing. The boys seemed genuinely shocked.

“So think about that the next time you hit on a girl. Maybe, like you in the taxi, she doesn’t actually want you to.”

He used bad words! He maybe smoked pot! He was suspended from school for “truancy” and for being late a lot! He quoted rap lyrics on his Twitter account! Given these revelations, it was clearly ok for an armed stranger to stalk him on the street and shoot him in the chest, right?

When I first watched the trailer for their new show Girls, I thought it was too good to be true. I had to turn it off, take a few deep breaths, and check the sources to make sure it wasn’t some elaborate joke being played on me personally. It’s just, how could something so perfectly cover all the bases and be on a channel that lets you see boobs? It’s just… good things like that don’t happen to average people like me, you know!? But there it was: everything I have ever dreamed of. The cast, white upon white upon white upon white, like that part in Willy Wonka where the kid is inside the TV. Beautiful. The setting? New York City, perhaps the most underrepresented area in the continental US in entertainment, especially when it comes to young white people discovering themselves. The carousel of disappointing lovers? Check and double-check! The lame sex jokes? In abundance!! The family backgrounds? Firmly middle-class. And to top it all off, the seemingly intelligent girls who regroup to do nothing but discuss their lame love lives, self-deprecate, wonder why things are going so wrong for them, or try to “figure themselves out” in the Big City™? CHECK AND MATE.

No wonder some women are unconsciously passive aggressive when expressing anger, sadness, or frustration. For years, they have been subjected to so much gaslighting that they can no longer express themselves in a way that feels authentic to them.

They say, “I’m sorry” before giving their opinion. In an email or text message, they place a smiley face next to a serious question or concern, thereby reducing the impact of having to express their true feelings.

You know how it looks: “You’re late :D ”

These are the same women who stay in relationships they don’t belong in, who don’t follow their dreams, who withdraw from the kind of life they want to live.

Why Women Aren’t Crazy (via lagrandefille)

I hate when people claim that women are crazy or complicated or don’t know what they want because fuck you. When a woman is vocal about her opinions, desires, feelings, you call her a bitch or crazy or hysterical. Women have been taught that the only way to communicate while maintaining their physical and emotional safety is to be indirect.

(via pompadoursandpincurls)

i feel like i have to filter my feelings somehow at all times. i made someone cry a few weeks ago at school. i didn’t even insult him. i was expressing a critique about his art. at art school. when the guys do it, they’re informed and ‘probably right.’ when the women do it, we’re crazy overachievers. i find myself having to say, ‘i mean, maybe it’s just me, but…’ or ‘well, this is just my opinion…’ all the time. why am i afraid to say what i really think when no one else seems to be?

(via greenstate)

There are so many times that I have to be very careful about how I say things, because I’m instantly labeled as a ‘bitch’. I’m really effin’ tired of it.

I’m so guilty of the smiley-face-when-you’re-actually-pissed-off thing it’s ridiculous.

The TLC reality show All-American Muslim, which follows five families in Dearborn, Michigan, has a lot of points to make about the lives of average Muslim citizens in America, among them the lingering discrimination they face after 9/11… Last week, hardware big-box store Lowe’s pulled its advertising from All-American Muslim under pressure–and thereby proved the show’s point. Lowe’s pulled its ads following a protest campaign from the Florida Family Association, which objects to the show, in essence, because it portrays Muslims too positively. That is, it argues the show is “propaganda” because it portrays peaceful, ordinary Muslims without mentioning horrible things that other Muslims have done.

All-American Muslim Meets an Un-American Advertising Pullout | Entertainment | TIME.com

The Florida Family Association criticizes the show because it “hides the Islamic agenda’s clear and present danger to American liberties and traditional values.” The organization’s mission statement is to “Educate people on what they can do to defend, protect and promote traditional, biblical values.” This is an organization that is clearly promoting hate and persecution of another group because of their religious affiliation. It is appalling that so many companies—not just Lowe—have pulled out their support for the show.

You can find a full list of companies who pulled their ads from All-American Muslim here. Appalling.

So, just so we’re clear: a 15-year-old who had unprotected sex and knows that she doesn’t want to be a mom is too immature to follow the directions on the box, but mature enough to birth and raise a baby?
